The repair hotline phone rings and the caller ID is “Sam”. “Hey, Norm. Guess what happened?”
I was a bit afraid to answer because Sam always tests my computer skills. Sam’s computer problems are never easy. An easy 15 minute job always becomes a more involved troubleshooting session but Sam always entertains with a few good jokes. “What’s going on Sam?”
“I took a trip and was transferred to a small commuter plane. Passengers had to check in even carry-on luggage. I didn’t even think about it. I just put my iPad in the zipper compartment on the suitcase. When I arrived at my destination, my iPad was missing.”
This was another situation where one or two bad apples can give an entire group of people a bad name. One baggage handler theft doesn’t translate to ALL baggage handlers are thieves but we travelers always wonder what happens to our luggage after it disappears into the airport terminal.
I assumed that the airline would compensate Sam for his loss but the airline stated that they were not responsible for any electronics. Sam was out of luck. It is too bad because his iPad had become an important appliance in his life. The iPad made sharing family pictures, reading email, and Internet searches very easy while travelling.
If you haven’t used an iPad, it makes carrying and using a computer very easy on the go. While portable computers have slimmed down from suitcases to compact portfolios, the iPad has also addressed the user experience. There is no mouse to manipulate. Point and press your finger to icons on the screen to execute things. If the print is too small, point your thumb and index finger together. Opening the thumb and index finger will magnify the screen.
You can purchase additional appliances for the iPad but most users have everything that they need built into the iPad. You don’t need a bag full of electronics stuff. All you really need is a charging cable. The iPad should provide at least 8 hours of use befoe it needs a charge. No more searching for a wall outlet during a long flight stopover.
In case you were wondering, Sam didn’t disappoint me during our last troubleshooting session. Here is a link to a great youtube video about an iPad. Check it out
You should be aware that Apple provides a service that will erase everything on your iPad remotely. Apple can also locate your iPad in case of theft, IF YOU ACTIVATE THE SERVICE. Apple users have used this service to locate stolen devices but hackers have also been able to use the service to erase a victim’s iPad or iPhone. “Buyer beware…”
