After over 5 years and almost 100 purchases and sales on ebay, I finally got scammed. Ebay even protected the bad guy. When I emailed to place a complaint, ebay responded that they could not tell me the the results of their investigation due to privacy issues. Ebay was concerned about a crook's privacy!

Sometimes my life gets pretty busy and I don't have time to pay attention to the details. I've had some good results on ebay and had grown careless. The warning signs were present but I overlooked them.

There was a particular piece of telecom equipment for auction on ebay.  The auction closed but the item was relisted. I sent the seller an email and asked why it was relisted. The original bidder had backed out. I offered the original bidder's price that was accepted by the seller. The seller emailed a paypal invoice which I paid. After a few days of no email from the seller, I started to get a bit suspicious.

Do you remember the laptop battery recalls in the past? Batteries aren't the only things generating recalls. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recently issued some warnings about Sony and Dell laptops.

Some Sony Vaio laptops are being recalled due a wiring and possible short circuit problem. If you have one of the following Sony Vaio laptop models, VGN-TZ100, VGN-TZ200, VGN-TZ300 and VGN-TZ2000, contact to Sony to inquire if your laptop is part of the recall.

Dell also had a laptop power adapter recall because of short circuits .

Affected units were shipped between September 1998 and February 2002. If your adapter has the following labels "P/N 9364U", "P/N 7832D", or "P/N 4983D", contact Dell to determine if your power adapter is one of the recalled units.

Are you considering a new laptop for school? Consider some issues before you make your purchase.

Are you going to be bringing the laptop to class? Will the laptop be a distraction or a tool to help you take notes? Are your eyes up to a small screen?

You wouldn't believe the number of people who quickly change their minds once they try using a small laptop. Sure it's ""cute" and easy to carry but a small screen might be hard on your eyes. Georgio, at Eyewear by Georgio in Chelmsford,, educated me about eyewear for computers.

Glasses have progressed beyond simple bifocals. Georgio recommends glasses that are "tuned" for your particular viewing requirements. You might find that glasses specifically designed for your viewing requirements allow you to comfortably use the computer for long periods of time.

The MBTA has made big computer news recently. What could be happening at a transit service that would be big computer news? Three MIT students were scheduled to present their findings about hacking the MBTA at a big hacker convention, Defcon. Defcon is the hacker equivalent to the world series.

The students met with MBTA representatives and disclosed their findings. It is not clear if the techniques were used by the students to steal services.

The students were thanked for their information and were served with a suit in federal court 4 days later. The suit blocked the students from presenting at Defcon or disclosing their information.
